"I Can" Statements
"I can" statements are statements given for students so they understand their mission for each lesson. "I can" statements state what a students should be able to do when they have mastered a standard. Check out the third-grade "I can" statements under the 'math' and 'English language arts' tabs.
What are standards?
Standards are the established set of information that students should have acquired at the end of each grade level. They are established by a board of educators and are used by teachers statewide and nationwide.
How do we make sure standards are achieved?
The school curriculum is aligned with the standards to create lessons which teach students the required material. Not only are students taught this material, but they are also formally and informally assessed to ensure that they have mastered each set standard. If students have not mastered a specific standard, they are given further instruction via a small group setting to allow them more time to master the standard.
What subjects have standards?
Currently there is an established set of standards for Math and English Language Arts
Why are standards necessary?
Standards are a way to ensure that students across the country are attaining the skills, knowledge and tools they need to become 21st century leaders! These give each teacher, school and district a goal to work toward, and allow for students to move fluently from teacher to teacher, school to school and district to district without creating "holes" in their learning.
What can I do as a parent or guardian?
As a parent or guardian of an elementary student it is crucial that you are ensuring they come to school ready to learn. This means they have adequate rest, adequate nutrition and a positive attitude toward education. This means that you equip your student with the "I can" attitude before they leave the house, and celebrate his or her successes as they grow and learn!
